Brave New Voices (BNV) is the international youth poetry slam festival that engages youth aged 13-19 in a week-long festival filled with poetry slams, workshops and community service opportunities. Every year, the festival takes place in a different US city. The 2018 Festival will take place in Houston Texas, July 18th-21st.
In only it's third year, competing internationally, Mass LEAP's team took 2nd place, performing for 3,200 at the San Francisco Opera House. The team was comprised of the top individually ranked poets from the LTABMA Festival. The 2017 featured returnees from the 2016 team Agnes Ugoji, Kofi Dadzie, Michelle Garcia, Temitope Sholola, with 2017 Individual Champion Andrine Pierresaint joining the team for the first time. The 2017 was coached by Porsha Olayiwola and LTABMA alumni Jonathan Mendoza.
Unlike in past years, the 2018 Brave New Voices Team will be selected by competitions taking place twice a month, by the YUNG House at the Haley House Cafe in Roxbury. In collaboration with HOUSE SLAM BOSTON, Yung Slam offers a continuation of leadership development, as the series is managed by alumni from both past BNV teams and Youth Spoken Word Leaders Programs. Throughout the school year, teen poets have been competing for a place in the finals, happening later this spring.
Brave New Voices Team have also presented at 2016 American For the Arts Conference, Cambridge River Fest, Longfellow House, Imagine Boston 2030 Celebration, Northampton Poetry Slam, Carceral State Conference at Harvard University, Porchfest and Primary Source Summer Teachers Professional Development Intensive.
